One or more products are basic to project-based learning. The public audience product is the major product. Other products such as drafts, essays, journals/logs etc. are products. Products emphasize the project’s academic objectives and may indicate focus success skills/attitudes and therefore can be used as part of formative and summative assessment. Requiring a written product is recommended.
- Often students are required to create a particular type of product(s), for example, an oral presentation with a visual. In this case they still have choices, for example, regarding the format and design of their product.
- Or students can choose from selections you provide.
- For a group or a student experienced in project-based learning, and who will follow through, a product the group or student asks to create that isn’t the required product or one of the class’s choices, might be fine. In that case, usually require that writing is involved in their product.
