Carrie Bakken

Carrie Bakken, MA in Teaching, JD, For Deeper Learning Board member, works with students engaged in social studies projects and serves as Program Coordinator, at Avalon School, an innovative public school in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 2001, Carrie Bakken was in a group of teachers and students who planned Avalon School’s initial structures. At Avalon, students learn though projects and subject seminars, as documented in the book, Deeper Learning: How Eight Innovative Public Schools Are Transforming Education in the Twenty-First Century

Because of her experience working in Avalon’s unique teacher-led and student-centered model, Carrie Bakkan was awarded a two year Aspen Institute/Pahara Teacher Fellowship and won an Outstanding Educator in Ethics Education award, sponsored by Minnesota-based WEM Foundation. She also serves as a Teacher Powered School Ambassador to nationally represent Avalon’s collaborative governance model. Carrie earned a Master of Arts degree in Teaching from the University of St. Thomas, a Juris Doctorate from Hamline University, and a Bachelors degree from Beloit College.
