Deeper learning is:
. Acquiring and being able to
apply academic content
and skills
. Thinking critically and
creatively to solve problems
. Working collaboratively
. Communicating effectively (Deeper Learning, Learning Policy Institute, 2020)
Deeper learning is forwarded by working to solve real world or simulated real-world challenges. Learners develop questions, connect with resources, research, and challenge-solve. Project-based learning, problem-based learning, service learning (service learning is different than community service), and expeditionary learning are overlapping deeper learning frameworks.
Education leader, Linda Darling Hammond, Learning Policy Institute, President and CEO, and Stanford University Education Professor Emeritus states:
“The mission for schools…must be to prepare students to work at jobs that do not yet exist, creating ideas and solutions for products and problems that have not yet been identified, using technologies that have not yet been invented…. our young people need to learn how to become analysts and investigators who can work with knowledge they themselves assemble to solve complex problems…” ( 2015, A new moment in education, Learning Policy Institute, https://learningpolicyinstitute.org/blog/new-moment-education)
With deeper learning students are engaged and motivated to learn. They develop abilities and attitudes needed in family, community, education, and work.
